Individual Health Insurance in Clearwater

If you buy coverage for yourself, the plan details matter more than the premium on the first page. We lay out side-by-side plan options from multiple carriers, explain the deductible, network and drug list on each, and help you enroll before a deadline forces a rushed choice.

A plan in your own name, picked with care

With individual health insurance, the policy belongs to you instead of an employer. It suits the self-employed, part-time workers, people between jobs, early retirees and anyone coming off a parent's plan at 26. You pay the carrier directly, and the coverage stays put if your job changes.

In Florida, most individual plans meet ACA rules. They include the same essential benefits and cannot refuse you over a pre-existing condition. The differences are in how they are built: the network type, deductible, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximum and drug tiers. Two plans priced alike each month can end up far apart once you start using care.

As an independent agency, we are not bound to any one carrier. The carrier you enroll with pays our commission, so our help does not add to your cost. Reach out a few weeks before coverage needs to start, not after your old plan has already ended.

What we cover together

Carriers compared on one page
Plans from several carriers go on a single sheet under matching headings: monthly premium, deductible, coinsurance, copays and out-of-pocket maximum. Seen in one place, the differences stand out.
Checking your doctors and hospitals
We search each plan's directory for the doctors and hospitals you use now. HMO and EPO plans are usually cheaper each month but generally do not pay for routine care out of network, so we do this step first.
Checking your prescriptions
Each insurer keeps its own formulary that places drugs on price tiers, and that tier sets what you pay per refill. We look up your current medications, because a cheap premium loses its edge fast when a monthly refill lands on an expensive tier.
Estimating your tax credit
When a Marketplace plan could come with a premium tax credit, we figure it from your expected income and family size. Our ACA Marketplace Plans page goes deeper on that program.
Application and first premium
We complete the application with you on the phone and confirm when coverage begins. The policy only takes effect once the first premium is paid, so we make sure you know the due date and how to pay.

When it makes sense to shop for your own coverage

  • Your job and its benefits are ending

Job-based coverage frequently stops on the last day of the month you leave. That loss starts a 60-day special enrollment window, and getting a plan lined up before your final day prevents a gap.

  • You are about to turn 26

A parent's plan usually stops covering you at 26. That counts as a qualifying event, so you can sign up outside open enrollment as long as you act inside the window.

  • You are going out on your own

New business owners and freelancers no longer get an employer covering part of the premium. We show what a plan costs when the whole bill is yours.

  • Your renewal letter looks different

Each year carriers update premiums, networks and drug lists. If your renewal shows a price increase or a doctor dropping out of network, use open enrollment to compare.

  • You relocated to a new county

Plans are sold by county, and moving counts as a qualifying event. If you came to Clearwater, Largo or Dunedin from somewhere else, your previous plan may not follow you.

How the consultation works

  1. 1

A short call to gather details

We ask your county, date of birth, expected income, doctors and medications. That is enough to price plans accurately and screen out the ones that will not fit.

  2. 2

Plans laid out side by side

We narrow the list to a few plans and walk through each one by phone, video or at our office. You hear why each made the cut and what you give up with the cheaper options.

  3. 3

You choose, we handle the application

Once you pick a plan, we go through the enrollment questions with you during that same call and confirm the effective date before we hang up. There is no fee for the consultation, and you are under no obligation to enroll.

  4. 4

    A review before renewal

Ahead of the next open enrollment, we can look at whether your plan still fits. Changes in income, doctors or medications are the usual reasons to switch.

What decides your premium and what you spend in a year

ACA rules keep carriers from pricing individual plans on your medical history. A few set factors decide the premium, and your full-year cost adds what you pay each time you get care. We show you both numbers so the budget covers twelve months, not one bill.

Age
A federal age scale sets how premiums climb, so the same plan costs an older applicant more.
Tobacco use
Carriers in Florida can charge extra for tobacco use. Give a truthful answer on the application, since a wrong one can lead to trouble down the road.
Metal tier and deductible
Bronze trades a smaller premium for a bigger deductible, and Gold does the opposite. When you expect frequent specialist visits or steady prescriptions, paying more each month can lower your total for the year.
Network type
Narrow-network HMO and EPO plans tend to cost less than PPO plans that cover some care outside the network.
Income and tax credits
For Marketplace plans, a premium tax credit tied to your expected income can bring the monthly bill down. A careful income estimate keeps you from owing some of it back when you file taxes.

Common questions about buying your own plan

Something not covered here? (727) 594-4589

Is it possible to get an individual plan after open enrollment ends?

Yes, if a qualifying life change applies to you. Typical examples are losing other coverage, moving to a different county, marrying or adding a child. Any of these starts a special enrollment period, generally 60 days. Otherwise you wait for open enrollment, which runs November 1 to January 15 on HealthCare.gov.

Does a health condition I already have make my plan cost more?

Not with an ACA-compliant plan. Carriers are not allowed to refuse you or raise your rate over your medical history, which is why ACA-compliant plans are where every comparison we run begins.

What do I gain by using an agency rather than calling a carrier?

One carrier can only offer its own lineup. We set several carriers next to each other using the same measures. Your premium does not change, and since the carrier you choose pays us, the comparison costs you nothing.

Are dental and vision part of an individual plan?

For adults, an individual medical plan generally leaves them out. Separate dental and vision policies can be added, and our Dental Insurance and Vision Insurance pages describe how they work.

How far ahead should I begin?

Allow a few weeks or more before your coverage needs to begin. A Marketplace plan starting January 1 has to be chosen by December 15. If a job is ending, reach out before your final day so the new plan picks up right where the old one stops.
